They know their products and customers from the ground up. Employees know their bosses were promoted because they were the superstars. Here, if you want to be middle management you must start at the bottom. The consolation is that promotions come from this pool. Management support is also seen in their attitude. As one manager mentioned, everyone works as a close knit group to put us on top, no one pushes for sales and forgets products, profits, or control. Everyone knows you can only sell it once, so they had better do it right the first time. Other plusses to such a system are fact that everyone keeps a customer perspective, and fact that it assures each manager has a clear understanding of the day to day business operation.
